Teeth Falling Out in a Dream in Islam (Khwab Mein Daant Girna): Meaning

Dreaming that your teeth are falling out (daant girna, دانت گرنا) is one of the most common dreams in the world, and it often leaves people worried, especially about their family. Here is what the classical books of Islamic dream interpretation say, explained simply. These are traditional interpretations, not predictions, and the books themselves often disagree.

Short answer: In the tabeer books, teeth stand for members of your family. Teeth falling into your hand or lap is often read as a good sign (wealth, or a child). Teeth falling with pain or blood, or falling to the ground, is read as a loss or worry. Many people see this dream when they are simply stressed.

Worried about your family after this dream? If the dream upset you, treat it as a bad dream: seek refuge in Allah, spit lightly to your left three times, turn over and don’t tell anyone, and it will not harm you, in sha Allah (Sahih al-Bukhari 7044). See the full Sunnah steps.

What do teeth mean in a dream in Islam?

The book attributed to Imam Ibn Sirin, Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam, explains that each tooth represents a member of the dreamer’s household. The front teeth are linked to the father’s side of the family (the father, paternal uncles and cousins), the canine to the head of the family, and the premolars to the mother’s side (maternal uncles and aunts) and other advisers. So a dream about one particular tooth is traditionally read as being about one particular relative.

Does dreaming of teeth falling mean someone will die?

This is the fear most people have. Some tabeer books do mention the death of relatives for certain versions of this dream, but others say the opposite. Ibn Sirin, for example, says that all teeth falling out means a long illness but not death for a healthy person, and Ibn Shaheen even lists long life as one possible meaning. Because the books disagree and only Allah knows the unseen, there is no reason to panic. A dream that frightens you should be treated with the Sunnah for bad dreams, not by searching for its worst meaning.

What should I do after this dream?

  1. If the dream frightened you, seek refuge in Allah, spit lightly to your left three times, turn over and don’t tell people about it (Sahih al-Bukhari 7044; Sahih Muslim 2262).
  2. Make du’a for your family’s health and keep in touch with relatives. Maintaining family ties is good whatever the dream meant.
  3. Give some charity if you wish. It’s always good, and it doesn’t depend on a dream.
  4. If you grind your teeth at night or have tooth pain, it’s worth seeing a dentist. Physical problems often show up in dreams.
