Short answer: In the tabeer books a scorpion usually stands for a weak enemy who harms with words: gossip, backbiting and stirring up trouble. A sting means being hurt by such talk; killing the scorpion means overcoming it, and lost money coming back.
What does a scorpion mean in a dream in Islam?
Imam al-Nabulsi writes in Ta’tir al-Anam that a scorpion points to worry, hardship and gossip, and to a weak, backbiting enemy who is sometimes a relative. Ibn Shaheen describes it as an enemy who harms with his tongue and can’t tell friend from foe, and the book attributed to Ibn Sirin calls it an enemy who doesn’t guard his tongue.

Black or yellow scorpion?
The main classical books summarised here don’t give separate meanings for black or yellow scorpions. The basic meaning stays the same: a scorpion is an opponent who harms with words, and the bigger and more dangerous it looked, the stronger that harm is understood to be.
What should I do after seeing a scorpion in a dream?
- If the dream frightened you, follow the Sunnah for a bad dream (Sahih al-Bukhari 7044; Sahih Muslim 2262).
- Don’t accuse anyone because of a dream. Al-Nabulsi himself warns that a dream can make you wrongly suspect someone.
- Guard your own tongue too. The scorpion in these books is linked to backbiting, which the Quran strongly forbids (Surah al-Hujurat 49:12).
- Recite the morning and evening adhkar for protection.
