Snake in a Dream in Islam (Khwab Mein Saanp Dekhna): Meaning & Tabeer

خواب میں سانپ دیکھنے کی تعبیر

Seeing a snake (saanp, سانپ) is one of the most common dreams people ask about, and one of the most frightening. Below is what the classical Islamic dream interpretation books say about a snake in a dream, from simply seeing one to being bitten or killing it. These are traditional interpretations, not predictions; the same dream can mean different things for different people.

Short answer: In the main books of tabeer, a snake usually stands for an enemy. How big or strong the snake is shows how strong the enemy is. Killing it means overcoming the enemy, and being bitten means some harm from them. A small snake is sometimes read as a child.

Was the dream frightening? A frightening dream is from Shaytan. The Sunnah is to seek refuge in Allah, spit lightly to your left three times, turn over and not tell anyone, and it will not harm you, in sha Allah (Sahih al-Bukhari 7044). See the full steps.

What does seeing a snake in a dream mean in Islam?

According to Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam, the book attributed to Imam Muhammad ibn Sirin, snakes in dreams are enemies, and the harm depends on the snake’s size. The same book says a snake can also represent a ruler, a wife or a child. Imam Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi, in Ta’tir al-Anam fi Ta’bir al-Manam, gives a similar list: an enemy, authority, treasure, a woman or a child.

Snake dream meanings by situation

What you sawTraditional meaning
Seeing a snake (saanp dekhna)An enemy; a bigger, thicker snake means a stronger enemy (Ibn Sirin).
Snake bite (saanp ka katna)Harm from an enemy, in proportion to the bite (Ibn Sirin); a setback that is hard to avoid (al-Nabulsi).
Killing a snake (saanp ko maarna)Victory over an enemy (Ibn Sirin, Ibn Shaheen, al-Nabulsi). This is generally seen as a good sign.
Catching or holding a snakeGaining something from an opponent without being harmed (Ibn Sirin, al-Nabulsi).

What does the colour of the snake mean?

  • Black snake (kaala saanp): the strongest and most harmful kind of enemy (Ibn Sirin, al-Nabulsi).
  • White snake (safaid saanp): the books disagree. Ibn Sirin calls it a hard enemy, while al-Nabulsi calls it a weaker one. Al-Karmani says lifting a white snake can mean gaining rank.
  • Yellow snake (peela saanp): an enemy linked to illness or weakness (al-Karmani).
  • Green snake (hara saanp): an enemy you should be careful of (al-Karmani).
  • Red snake (laal saanp): an enemy with strong family or group support (al-Karmani).

As you can see, even the classical scholars differ on some details. That’s normal in dream interpretation, and it is one reason a tabeer should never be treated as certain.

What should I do after seeing a snake in a dream?

  1. If the dream scared you, follow the Sunnah for a bad dream: A’udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim, spit lightly to the left three times, turn over, and don’t tell people about it (Sahih al-Bukhari 7044; Sahih Muslim 2262).
  2. Don’t start suspecting people around you because of a dream. A dream alone is not evidence against anyone.
  3. Recite the morning and evening adhkar, Ayat al-Kursi and the last three surahs before sleeping, as the Sunnah teaches for protection.
  4. If you dream of snakes often and it affects your sleep or peace of mind, speak to a trusted scholar, and to a doctor if anxiety is part of it.

Ghulmil’s note: Most people who see a snake in a dream are simply stressed or worried about someone. Before you look for hidden enemies, follow the Sunnah steps, make du’a, and let it go. If a dream keeps troubling you, you can send it to us and we’ll reply by email.
