خواب کی اقسام اور اچھے برے خواب کے بعد کیا کریں
Almost everyone wakes up from a dream and wonders what it meant. Islam takes dreams seriously: the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) spoke about them often, and a whole book of Sahih al-Bukhari is about dreams and their interpretation. This guide explains the three types of dreams in Islam, what to do after a good dream and after a bad dream (nightmare), and how to think about khwab ki tabeer (dream interpretation). Every hadith below is quoted from Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim, with its reference so you can check it yourself.
The three types of dreams in Islam
The Prophet (ﷺ) said that dreams are of three types, as narrated by Abu Hurairah in Sahih Muslim 2263:
- A good dream (ru’ya, سچا یا اچھا خواب): good news (glad tidings) from Allah.
- A bad or frightening dream (hulm, برا خواب): from Shaytan, meant to make a person sad or afraid.
- A dream from one’s own mind (خیالی خواب): what a person was thinking or worrying about during the day.
Most ordinary dreams, such as dreaming about your exam, your office or a film you watched, belong to the third type and carry no special meaning.
Good dreams are glad tidings
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Nothing is left of prophethood except al-mubashshirat.” When he was asked what they are, he said: “True good dreams” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6990). Anas bin Malik narrated that “a good dream of a righteous man is one of forty-six parts of prophethood” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6983).
This does not mean that a dreamer becomes a prophet or receives new religion. Scholars explain it as a sign of how valuable a true, good dream can be as encouragement for a believer.
What to do after a good dream
- Thank Allah, say Alhamdulillah, because a dream you like is from Allah (Sahih al-Bukhari 6985).
- You may share it, but only with someone you love and trust (Sahih al-Bukhari 7044).
- Don’t build big decisions on it alone. Treat it as good news and keep making du’a and effort.
What to do after a bad dream or nightmare
The Sunnah gives clear, simple steps. They come from Sahih al-Bukhari 6985 and 7044 and Sahih Muslim 2262 and 2263:
- Seek refuge in Allah from its evil and from Shaytan. Say: A’udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim (أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم), three times.
- Spit lightly (dry) to your left three times.
- Turn over and sleep on your other side.
- If you wish, get up and pray two rak’ahs.
- Don’t tell anyone about it. The Prophet (ﷺ) said that if you do this, “it will not harm him” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6985).
Many people do the opposite: they wake up scared, phone a relative and search for the meaning of the nightmare online. The Sunnah teaches us to leave a bad dream alone and not look for its tabeer.
Never make up a dream
Ibn Abbas narrated a stern warning that whoever claims to have seen a dream he did not see will be ordered on the Day of Judgment to tie two grains of barley together, which he will never be able to do (Sahih al-Bukhari 7042). So when you ask anyone about a dream, describe it honestly, without adding or changing details.
Is khwab ki tabeer (dream interpretation) certain?
No. Interpreting dreams is a skill based on knowledge and judgment, not certain knowledge of the unseen. Classical scholars such as Muhammad ibn Sirin (d. 110 AH) were famous for it, and many popular dream books carry his name, although historians doubt that he wrote the books attributed to him. The same symbol can mean different things for different people and situations.
That is why the tabeer pages on Ghulmil always say “according to traditional dream interpretation books” and never promise what will happen. If a dream really troubles you or seems important, speak to a trusted scholar (aalim) who knows you and your situation. And Allah knows best.
When nightmares need a doctor, not a dream book
Frequent nightmares can come from stress, poor sleep, illness, medicines or a frightening experience. If bad dreams happen often, stop you from sleeping, or affect your daily life, talk to a doctor. Seeking treatment doesn’t conflict with faith.

Frequently asked questions
Are all dreams meaningful in Islam?
No. Only true good dreams are described as glad tidings. Frightening dreams are from Shaytan, and many dreams simply reflect our own thoughts (Sahih Muslim 2263).
Should I tell people about my dream?
Share a good dream only with someone you love and trust. Don’t tell anyone about a bad dream (Sahih al-Bukhari 7044).
Can a bad dream harm me?
The Prophet (ﷺ) said that if you seek refuge in Allah and don’t tell anyone, it will not harm you (Sahih al-Bukhari 6985).
Who can interpret my dream?
A knowledgeable, trustworthy scholar. Dream books, including Ghulmil’s pages, only give general traditional meanings.
